Katie McN

I was Born in Texas a little more than 30 years ago. I'm a third generation
member of an oil business family and was raised in the country for the most
part. The family was five boys and me, plus dad and mom. I bet you're not
surprised to learn that my formative interests were Junior Rodeo Barrel
Racing, skinny dipping and fighting.

Somehow I managed to get a math degree and then followed that success with
an MBA. I drifted into computer work without realizing how much I'd like it
and now  I own a little computer consulting business where I specialize in
communications and the internet. A lot of things happened along the way and
I've decided to write a series of stories about the highs and lows of my
life. A couple of these stories can be found in the AFO archive including
my personal favorite, Mallory.

I was looking forward to the writing course I took in my freshman year.
After I submitted a few writing assignments, the instructor informed me
that she knew I was plagiarizing the work. She said it was just a matter of
time before she found my sources. She never did come up with anything since
the writing came from my own sweat and effort. She did leave a bad taste in
my mouth so instead of  taking more writing courses, I ended up piling on
the advanced math and science.

During a very dark time in my life I ended up in a hospital where a
chemical imbalance was discovered. I got into therapy at the same time. I
continue to take medication and see a therapist on a regular basis. My
therapist thought it might be a good idea if I tried to write about
personal things to see if I could clear up some of the blank areas in my
memory. A lot of my history includes topics that might cause problems on
AFO so I started writing erotica in order to have a venue where I wouldn't
have to worry about story content. I found out that erotica was difficult
to write. Porn authors have to write stories just like everyone else and
they also have to make sure there's enough hot stuff in a story to
seriously appeal to prurient interests.  I was surprised to discover that
porn had rules for every type of story and that readers got testy if an
author happened to break one.

I always thought I'd move from porn to mainstream fiction, but it's been
hard to make the change because my fans have been so nice. I won Best New
Author writing awards in my first year, Best Author awards in my second
year and was given a place in Alt Sex Stories Hall of Fame in my third year
of writing. I got a mention in Salon and met a lot of fun people along the
way. I kept imagining heading back to college to tell my English Lit
teacher she made a mistake. I haven't done it yet, but maybe I'll will one
of these days.

There are some other places where I was able to leave a mark by getting
paid for writing and having fun. This includes a computer systems book that
sold quite a few copies, a column about the internet for one of the
internet portals and some other interesting writing assignments. I thought
my non-fiction success would make fiction writing a snap. I certainly was
wrong and continue to try to learn. I hope to have a novel published one of
these days.
